The last night of November my neighbors had a party. The party included two things apparently essential to any Thai shindig: drink and (loud) karaoke. The neighbors generally behave themselves, so I figured one night of loudness is probably excusable.
The next time the neighbors saw me, they brought me a plate of fruit and two bowls of sweets. Since this is the first time they’ve given me anything, I interpreted it as an apology for the noise. Nonetheless, when I returned their dishes, I wanted not to return them empty.
On my birthday I received a cookie press. Anxious to try it out, I went ahead and made some cookies and put some of them on the dishes to be returned. The look on the neighbor’s face when she saw the cookies made me think that this was one time returning the dishes empty would not have been a problem at all. She was definitely surprised.
