Good news: Nan, Gabe, and Seth made it down from the top of Ben Nevis. They had arrived at the top at the perfect time; the snow had stopped falling and the clouds had lifted a little above the peak. By the time they got back down, clouds again covered the summit.
Sunday we went to a small church (we were about a third of those in attendance). We then had a beautiful drive to Sandend. We can see the sea from our dining room table. Sandend is mentioned briefly in one of my favorite books, Malcolm by George MacDonald! I like factually standing on fictional ground. There is something about being here that makes the story a little more real.
Yesterday we went to Leith Hall. One fun thing at the house was a large photograph of the Laird and all his tenants (not the whole family, just the man or woman of the house). The Laird took them all by train to Aberdeen for the photograph. Their names were all recorded. Our tour guide had two ancestors in the pictures. Britain’s new prime minister also has a maternal ancestor in the photo.
Today we went to Crathes Castle and to Aberdeen. In Aberdeen we walked along cobblestone streets in Old Aberdeen around the University George MacDonald attended. In the cathedral we went into there was a memorial commissioned by Robert the Bruce.
