Missed

words and music by Micah Fickett

I’m tired of missed opportunities
I’m sick of wasted time
I’m weary of wandering off on my own

Forbidden fruit has not satisfied
Bitter waters cannot refresh
My heart hungers for heaven’s bread
My body cries out for flowing streams of life

I’m tired of missed opportunities
I’m sick of wasted time
I’m weary of wandering off on my own
I’m longing for closer proximity
I want to seize the day
I’m ready to run this race for the prize

Pursuing pleasure I caught the wind
Chasing glory I grabbed emptiness
I want to build on solid ground
I want to catch more than moving mist

I’m tired of missed opportunities
I’m sick of wasted time
I’m weary of wandering off on my own
I’m longing for closer proximity
I want to seize the day
I’m ready to run this race for the prize

Give me a noble purpose
I’m asking for a worthy cause

I’m tired of missed opportunities
I’m sick of wasted time
I’m weary of wandering off on my own
I’m longing for, I’m longing for
I’m longing for closer proximity
I want to seize the day
I want to be where you are

Guitars

My new neighbor Craig and I just had the first of (Lord willing) many fun jam sessions. I think we will be able to learn a lot from each other in the guitar category, and have fun in the process.

Time

Time in Thailand is different than time in the U.S. Saturday night I had worship practice “around 5:00.” Apparently, “around 5:00″ roughly translates to 7:13. The pace of the practice also reflected a difference in temporal attitude. We didn’t leave until 9:40. We then met again the next morning “at 7:00″ (people other than myself showed up between 8:05 and 9:00). Sunday night we met to go out for dinner “at 6:00″ (we left the meeting place sometime after seven).

So time is part of the culture that I still need to figure out. Some things really do start at the stated time. I’m never sure when to show up an hour late and when to be on time.

In other news, the choir sang on Sunday and I had a solo . . . in Spanish!

Three Guitars on the Roof

Yesterday was a good day. The week had been admittedly a little rough. The sudden addition of 60 people to the building made sleep a little difficult for the first two nights. Additionally I was having a hard time feeling like I belonged. There were lots of groups of people, but none of them seemed readily penetrable, especially for someone with weak

Thai. Living alone I have not often felt lonely. This last week surrounded by people I felt very much lonely.

Yesterday, as I said, was a good day. I spent the morning talking to some of my family via Skype. In the afternoon I sat down to listen to someone I know playing guitar, and ended up spending the majority of the afternoon there. Several other people joined us. I enjoyed the time listening to music. Singing a few English songs. Talking some.

Somewhere in here I played 2 on 2 basketball.

In the evening I had an extra choir practice (to prepare for Palm Sunday).

After choir practice I joined people on the roof of the church for another few hours of guitaring. During the time on the roof I got to know a few more of the people who are in the building, and they got to know me. I think it was a significant step from foreign towards familiar.

Of Airports and Symphonies

Happy Birthday Judah!

Today was a good day. I spent time in the morning writing out chords to some of the hymns in the BIC hymnal I brought along. I then had a good time singing them.

A little after 9:00 I left my residence to go meet friends who where flying  through Bangkok. We were able to have about three hours together during their layover. It was really good to reconnect.

I then made my way to Lumpini Park where the the Bangkok Symphony was playing. It was very nice. The symphony was seated in a pavilion. The palm trees on either side of the pavilion were draped with white lights. There was a light breeze. Slightly detracting from the mood was the thumping music of the aerobic dance a few hundred yards away in the park (I think every park in Bangkok has aerobic dance in the evenings. People come out in droves).

The music played was very fun. They played the theme from Mission Impossible. They had an excellent soloist from Chiang Mai sing a few songs (the title I remember was “I could have danced all night”). The symphony was joined by a jazz trio for, if I’m thinking right, Rhapsody in Blue. They played some other fun stuff that I really should be able to remember names for, but I can’t. I’ll blame it on the late hour.

Speaking of the late hour, I just go ahead and mention for any of you who may be wondering: I usually post my entries so that the appear as having been written on the day that I wrote them even if I did not post them that day. However, I do not usually adjust the time to acurately reflect the time of day when they were written. If you look closely, there are some post that appear to have been written before the events which they describe took place.
