Quizzing

This past weekend I did not get the sleep I sometimes do, but I did get to see some of my brothers at BIC Bible Quizzing Finals. Some brothers who were not quizzing set up a webcam so that I could watch the quizzing via Skype.

It made me miss quizzing. It made me miss people. There is nothing like quizzing for motivating yourself to memorize scripture, or for meeting quality people from across the denomination. Plus, it’s a lot of fun.

Magic

This morning when I left for school there were boxes from moving piled in the front hallway. There was a stack of laundry piled in front of the washer. There were a few dishes in the sink. The play room floor was covered with various kids things I’d gathered from around the house: car seats, booster seats, dolls, balls, etc.

When I got home today the boxes were gone. The laundry was clean and folded. The dishes I had left in the sink were put away (presumably having been cleaned first). The play room floor was clear and clean. Things had been stacked neatly along the walls.

Having house help is a lot like living in an enchanted castle, especially if you never see the house help because you are away at school.

For the record, the house help isn’t something I arranged. The people whose house I’m living in are continuing to employ their house help while they are away.

Wai Kru Day วันไหว้ครู

Today is Wai Kru Day at my school. It is a day when students show their respect to their teachers. I don’t know if my ego is getting way too large, or if I am adjusting to the culture, but this year it didn’t feel as strange to have all my students bowing down to me with their faces to the floor.

I was deeply touched when a large group of students from last year came over to my building and presented me with flowers and asked for my blessing. It was much more meaningful than the main school-wide ceremony. That ceremony was mandatory. The smaller, more intimate exchange of blessings was something my students chose to do, they wanted to show their respect for me.

I also had a group of students present me with flowers during lunch, and another group present me with flowers after school.

It was a neat day.

The only weird thing was noticing that for the school-wide ceremony the boys in each homeroom presented their teacher with an elaborate candle. The girls presented an elaborate flower or cup of scented water.
